How Safe is Your Allergy Medication?

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed a "black box" warning on various allergy and asthma medications. "Black box" warnings are precautionary statements about possible severe side effects of a medication, and are meant to stimulate discussion between the doctor and the patient about the risks and benefits of using such a medication.

Currently, the most popular allergy and asthma medications that have a "black box" warning include Advair, Elidel and Protopic. It appears that the FDA will give the injectable medication for asthma, Xolair, a "black box" warning in the near future.
