Xolair: An Injectable Medication for Asthma

Saturday July 21, 2007
There is often mucn confusion regarding the use of "shots" to treat allergic disease. Many patients come to my clinic asking for an "allergy shot", and are often referring to an injectable steroid that will treat symptoms in the short run, but lead to potentially severe side effects in the long run. Immunotherapy, what most allergists are refer to as "allergy shots", work more like a vaccine against allergies, changing the way a person's immune system reacts when exposed to allergens.

Xolair is a relatively new injectable medication used to treat moderate to severe asthma. It is the only medication that acts to block allergic antibody, or IgE, which is the underlying trigger for allergic asthma. Find out more about how Xolair works, who should use it, and safety concerns regarding this medication.
