Allergen-Free Peanuts

A food scientist has developed a peanut that is free from the most common peanut allergen, Ara h 1. This may provide the tens of thousands of Americans with peanut allergy the ability to enjoy peanut-containing foods. It may also lead to the overall reduction of the development of peanut allergy in the future for many people.

Peanut allergy represents one of the most common, severe food allergies. It is very difficult to avoid peanuts, with accidental ingestion of peanuts extremely common in an American diet. Once a person develops peanut allergy, only about 20% will outgrow it.
