Zyrtec-D Available Over the Counter Without a Prescription

Wednesday November 14, 2007
Zyrtec-D (cetirizine HCl 5 mg and pseudoephedrine HCl 120 mg), a medication combining a powerful, low-sedating antihistamine with an oral decongestant, has been recently approved by the FDA for availability over-the-counter without a prescription. This medication is very effective for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, especially when nasal congestion is a major symptom. The antihistamine component alone, Zyrtec (cetirizine), is expected to be available over-the-counter without a prescription by the end of the year.

Zyrtec, with or without the added decongestant, appears to be the most effective antihistamine available for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. I am not a big advocate for the use of long-term decongestants; therefore I don't prescribe much Zyrtec-D for my patients. I see any of the "-D" products as good for short-term or occasional use when nasal congestion is a major problem. The long-term use of oral decongestants are associated with multiple side effects, including insomnia, high blood pressure, anxiety, chronic headaches and palpitations.
