Mobile Phone Allergy

Thursday October 16, 2008
It seems everyone today has a cell phone. No matter where you go, be it the coffee shop, the grocery store, or the public restroom, people are on their cell phones -- maybe a bit too much. In fact, people are starting to develop allergic reactions to their cell phones.

There have been recent reports of people with unexplained itchy rashes of the ears and cheeks. After extensive evaluations by their physicians, it was determined that these people were suffering from contact dermatitis from the nickel plating on the cell phones.

"Mobile phone dermatitis", as the rash is being called, may occur especially in people with past reactions to nickel, such as with inexpensive jewelry and with metal snaps on jeans and belt buckles. Treatment with topical steroids and avoidance of future contact (getting a hands-free device) should quickly resolve the problem!

Thank you Thank you Thank you. I have always wondered why it is impossible for me to talk on the cell phone for more than a few minutes without getting a rash. Now I know. I am also allergic to cheap jewelry and never understood why. What is the alternative with cell phones–just using a headset? Are there phones made that don’t have nickel plating?

Maybe this is the silver lining in the storm cloud. Cell phones are so intrusive in the first place, maybe this will make people think twice about using their cell phones so much, especially in public.
