Carter's Baby Clothing Causing Rashes

Monday October 27, 2008
Carter's Inc, a popular company for baby clothes, makes a line of clothing with tag-less labels that have been causing rashes on the upper backs of about 400 babies. This has prompted the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue a warning to this particular line of clothing, which is from the fall 2007 line. The reason for the rashes is not clear -- I suspect that the babies are experiencing contact dermatitis from the ink contained within the iron-on labels. Other forms of contact dermatitis from clothing can be caused by formaldehyde contained in clothing that has been worn before it was washed.

My daughter has been wearing Carter’s onesies and sunsuits the last half year, although I have no idea whether what she has are from the affected batch. Do you know if only the fall 2007 clothes are affected?

My son has also been wearing Carter’s and although he hasn’t had any rashes from the clothing, I am wondering if it is safe to buy from them in the future. Have they fixed this problem? Also, have they pinpointed whether it is the ink dye and if so, is there a list of other clothing companies using this dye?

Why post something that is inconclusive. Your not sure what caused the rashes? Then parents get in a frenzy. Carter’s is completely fine. It is nearly all I buy for my baby.
