Should You Be Taking Benadryl For Your Allergies?

By July 20, 2010

Follow me on:

Benadryl is a commonly used over-the-counter antihistamine taken for the treatment of various allergic conditions, such as nasal allergies, eye allergies and skin allergies such as hives. While Benadryl is reasonably effective, at least for a few hours, it is far too sedating to be taken on a routine basis. Learn more about the pros and cons of taking Benadryl, and the better treatment options that are available.

Saw your article on breastfeeding allergy. I developed contact dermatitis in the hospital from the baby monitors placed on my stomach. Went home and developed another horrible rash all over my torso, chest, back. My doc prescribed steroids for a week and it seemed to go away. He thought it may be an id reaction from the first rash. Now I am 2 days steroid free and I think the rash is coming back. I am currently breastfeeding and wonder if the hormones could be the cause? I haven’t used anything different to cause this rash.

Although this product says it may take a few days, it worked for me right away. I received the item in the afternoon and normally the mornings are fough because I like to have all the windows open. Prior to taking Clear Guard, I was a sneezing and snuffed nosed mess as soon as I woke up. Sometimes I woke up extremely early because I couldn’t breathe and couldn’t get back to sleep. After the first day taking it and ever since, I have no issues breathing, my nose isn’t stuffed up, and I can enjoy a day without sneezing and watery eyes.

(9) Acne Complex Murad says:

I took Benadryl for almost a year on and off to deal with sleep disorders. The problem was I could not sleep without it for a while. Just like any other medication it has addictive chemicals that make it hard to kick. Occasional use is the best option for me.

(18) Tania Henderson says:

Yesterday I was stung by a wasp and started to develop severely itchy skin and my arm began swelling. I went to see the doctor today and he recommended benedry and clairiton. I got some and took it right away but neither seems to be working to decrease the itchiness or even make me drowsy. Should I be taking a stronger dose?

(19) Sarai says:

I had an allergy test done which revealed that I’m allergic to every tree, grass and weed that grows in the state of GA, except for a ragweed called lams quarters. The usual reaction for me is either congestion, which I can normally handle, and the less tolerable reaction of intense itching or hives. Benadryl is my BEST FRIEND!! The drowsiness effect really depends on the severity of the reaction, for example, if i’m having hives, I can take 75mg and not even get tired…where if I take it for congestion, I will be sleepy in like an hour. Either way, i’m so thankful for an allergy med that stops itching like immediately. and its safe!
