Could Your Infant Have a Baby Formula Allergy?

Many infants experience adverse symptoms with consumption of baby formula. Some of these reactions may be allergic in nature, while others may represent a food intolerance. Food intolerances in infants often involve FPIES, or food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome. In cases of true food allergy, if an infant is allergic to a milk-based formula, then most often a soy-based formula will be tolerated (and vice versa). On the other hand, if an infant has FPIES, then usually milk and soy-based formulas will both cause problems, and hydrolyzed or elemental/amino acid based formulas need to be used.
