Lastacaft (alcaftadine) is an eye drop approved for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. Lastacaft treats eye allergies by acting as an antihistamine, as well as acting to stabilize mast cells from releasing allergic chemicals during an allergic reaction. This medicine has the unique ability to block various types of histamine receptors, including H1, H2, and H4, all of which are important in eye allergy. Lastacaft has been shown in various studies to reduce eye itching within 15 minutes, and continues to treat eye allergy symptoms for at least 16 hours after use.
Lastacaft was approved by the FDA in 2010 for the prevention of eye itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. The correct dosage is one drop in each eye twice a day for adults and children 2 years of age and older. Lastacaft is the only allergy eye drop that has a pregnancy category B rating. Side effects are rare, and include eye irritation (burning and stinging), eye redness, eye itching, nasal and throat irritation, and headache.
