Dust Mites a Major Concern for Allergy and Asthma Sufferers

In those suffering from allergies, nearly 70% report problems with dust mite allergy. Dust mites are microscopic arthropods present in bedding, carpeting and upholstery. People with dust mite allergy are allergic to the mite droppings and other mite body parts. Dust mites are especially prevalent in humid environments such as coastal climates and the southeastern United States.

Various control measures can be taken to decrease the amount of dust mite exposure. These include frequent washing of bedding in hot water, frequent vacuuming with a HEPA-equipped vacuum cleaner, as well as utilizing allergen-covers on pillows and mattresses. Attempts to de-humidify the air, especially to less than 50% relative humidity, can substantially decrease the amount of dust mites living in the home. Because dust mites cannot drink, they rely on moisture from the air in order to live.
