The correct spacing for a metered dose inhaler is shown here. The device is best placed outside of the mouth during use, which increases the amount of medication that enters the lungs and decreases the amount that lands in the mouth.

There are different ways to use metered dose inhalers (MDI), and most people use these asthma medications without a spacer. Learn the most effective way to use an MDI.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:
- Remove the cap from the end of the inhaler device.
- Shake the inhaler device and ensure it is "primed" (sprays freely).
- Hold the inhaler in front of your mouth but not inside of your mouth. See image for correct spacing.
- Exhale comfortably.
- While depressing the silver canister within the inhaler device, take as deep of a breath as possible through your mouth.
- Hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds.
- Repeat steps 2 through 6 if instructed by your doctor to take 2 puffs of medication from the spacer.
- Rinsing your mouth and/or brushing your teeth may be required after the use of certain MDIs, such as inhaled steroids.
- Perform the above steps as often as prescribed by your doctor.
