Typical avoidance of dust mites includes frequent washing of bedding material every week or two in hot water. Stuffed animal toys, however, should be removed from the child’s bed, and washed every 2 weeks if possible. If the stuffed toy cannot be submersed in water because it could get waterlogged, then the stuffed toy should be placed in the freezer for 24 to 48 hours. The stuffed toys should then be hand-washed in soapy water, which will remove the dead dust mites and their droppings.
