What I Did:

College Test Nightmare

How I Did It:

I was being treated for a urinary tract infection so I went to my obgyn I had gone to for 3 years. Same office but I would see different doctors. It clearly stated in my chart my allergy to Sulfa drugs so I thought nothing of it when she gave me my prescription and sent me on my way. I picked it up and went home to begin taking it and go to bed early as I had college entrance exams the next morning and had to drive for an hour to school. The next morning I wake up and it felt like a freight train hit me. I had a fever, rash, I couldn't walk and was passing out. I new I couldn't have been hit with the flu so quickly as I felt perfect yesterday and figured I better check my medicine. It was generic brand so I wasn't sure. I called my mother whose a nurse and read her the name. She immediately was like "what the hell are you doing taking that!!! stop immediately it contains sulfa" Ohhh no great. Meanwhile I am set to take my exams and due to my fever and the fact that I keep passing out there is no way I can drive but I refuse to miss exams. My mother had to come drive me to the campus where I did indeed sit for my college placement exams in Spanish, Math, and English all the time nodding off in between!!!! I made it through and passed them with hight enough grades that I didn't have to be in beginner classes thank god. By night I was exhausted and had started to recover but it took me at least 2 more days after to be fully back to myself.

Lessons Learned

  • Never never never just blindly accept what your doctor prescribes. If you have an allergy and don't understand the medicinal name, ask. It's better safe than sorry when it's your life on the line and in my case my future at school as well.
