From the article: Hamster, Rabbit and Iguana Allergy
Everyone's heard of allergies to dogs and cats -- after all, pet ownership in the United States is very common and allergies of some kind affect nearly 1/3 of the general population. But what about allergies to less common pets, such as hamsters and guinea pigs? Horses and rabbits? Ferrets and sugar gliders? Even reptiles such as iguanas? Allergy to these exotic pets has been reported as well. In fact, a person can be allergic to just about any pet that has dander, scales, or produces urine. Do you have an unusual pet allergy? UNUSUAL ALLERGIC REACTION TO OUR NEW CAT
- We had dog a dog for 12 years, but he died and it was very hard on my wife and I. We decided on a cat this time. Within a week I developed a hives which is not that unusual. After a month my feet swelled so much that I can no longer wear shoes. I could live with the rash, but the Hospital Emergency Room Doctor told me that, unless Prednisone takes the swelling down within two weeks, I must get rid of the cat. Even in this short time we have both grown to love this cat. I am 70 and walking with a cane the way it was due to multiple spinal problems. I now wear sandals instead of shoes. Everytime I think I should get rid of the cat, I look at him and just can't seem to do it. I am almost out of the prescription medication and I have been taking Benadryl along with it. The hives seem to be slightly better, but my feet have not improved at all. Getting rid of this companion will be hard on my wife and myself. Do I follow doctor's orders? What could happen if I don't? Help
