From the article: Oral Allergy Syndrome
As an allergist, I frequently see patients with severe pollen allergies. It always surprises me how often these people report symptoms of the oral allergy syndrome to certain fresh fruits and vegetables. Most of my patients have never heard of the association between these food allergies and their pollen allergies, but have figured out interesting ways to deal with these reactions. Help for Oral Allergy Syndrome
- Have been allergic to apples for a long time, but if I peel them I can eat them fine. Still allergic to cherries and somewhat to peaches. It is always worse during allergy season but taking Zyrtek helps immensely! Also like some said, cooking the fruit is another option, it breaks down the proteins that cause the allergic reaction. Whatever you do, don't rub your eyes after handling or peeling these fruits if you are allergic, your eyes will practically seal shut!

Contact Dermatitis
- My son gets blisters on his lips, which itch, then swell, then dry out and his lips crack. Is this OAS? It is usually during allergy season. The dermatologists have called it Contact Dermatitis, and think mango skin is a trigger, plus nickel, but I wonder if OAS is part of it.

living with food allergies
- I have had a fruit and vegetable allergy since puberty and never understood why I could eat all these when I was a kid. I am allergic to raw carrots, celery, watermelon, avacado, melons, cantaloupe, almonds, certain lettuce, especially ridiccio, radishes, banana, and many more. I wish I had a cure, because most of us afflicted with this love these foods. I have chosen to avoid them altogether due to the severity of some of my symptoms. These range from mild throat irritation to severe with itching in the ears and the sensation that my throat is closing up. I've had my lips swell and my gums. I've even broken out on my hands in itchy bumps from cutting the vegetable or fruit. I've also broken out in hives once from a shot of tequila. Do not take your symptoms lightly. Stay away as I do so you dont have to suffer the aftermath.

Cure to OAS?
- Good to know l am not the only one suffering from this OAS. and many people think l'm picky. l love fruits but can't eat them. l have some sort of rush in my mouth after eatin them and this itchyfeeling. afterwards l throw up everything. One time i ate apples on an empty stomch but l threw up every bit of it and it was painful because my body was trying to get rid of its juices. l usually gugle with a little salt to make that itchiness go away it helps some time is thre a cure to this cause i miss fruits.

Finally!
- For years I complained about irritation in my mouth and throat whenever I ate fruits like bananas and apples. My parents never believed me, claimed I was just being picky. When my lips broke out in hives I knew I wasn't exaggerating things. So I got tested and my results were positive for Ragweed, Birch, and Oak. It stinks not knowing when I'll develop an allergy to things I love to eat, but at least I know why.

At last...a name for this!
- My 16 year old daughter has been complaining of itchy gums, mouth and throat after eating fresh fruit like apples, oranges, melons etc. She had allergy tests but not for particular fruit and also suffers severley from hayfever. At last we have a name for this and I know both of us aren't crazy! Has anyone got a cure for an itchy throat? Thanks for all the info.

OAS
- Seems like I am not the only crazy one with this problem. I have done so many allergy testings and the result never show any reactions to my fruit issue; therefore, Doctors think I am insane. How sad because I went to the well known ones and they still have no clue about all this. Yeah, I pretty much stay away from fresh veggies and fruits, nuts, and dairy. This is the only way to stay alive I guess, however, I find it really hard to eat healthy.Good Luck to everyone else

Don't worry!
- I have allergies to apples, cherries, strawberries, almonds, grapes, and today I have a new allergy to carrots. I have never had allergies in the past, but I recently started allergy shots. I notice my reaction to the foods are starting to calm down and the doctor said in a few years I will be able to have some of these foods again. if you are truly suffering from this, I recommend the shots! a friend of mine is now eating apples. she used to be extremely allergic to them

Many allergies
- I am gluten intolerant, milk triggers my asthma and am allergic to dogs, cats, rabbits, grass weeds and cottonwood trees. I'm also allergic to Haddock fish, strawberries, raspberries, pomegranates, mangoes and red and purple grapes. As all of the allergies trigger my asthma, I have now cut my diet down to a pretty small amount of food that I know I can have without an issue and avoid all other food until I can get allergy tested. As I have no insurance, I have to wait until I can save up $800 dollars to pay for it. My reactions are itchy mouth (inside and out), massive, bright red rash on my face and neck that last a long time, itchy ears, etc. I'm now pretty afraid of food! I try and eat healthy, 75% of my diet is fruits and veggies. But EVERY new fruit (and there have been many!) I've tried in the last 6 months, I've been allergic to!! What can I do!!!!! I would like to eat more than 20 different things and get some variety to my diet!!!!!!!

Random group of fruits
- I though that having my mouch swell, and ears itch when I ate things like bananas, raw potatoes, and almonds was normal for a long time. I am glad to know I'm not crazy, kinda bummed that I cant eat some of my favorite things anymore. It was good to find out as well, it has helped my understand that maybe my asthma is allergy induced as well!

Wouldn't wish it on my enemy!
- I have been living with OAS all my life and only just found out this is what is causing it. It has been very hard for me but I will not suffer in silence any more. \m/

caution to carrot/apple allergy people
- I have been allergic to apples and carrots since I was a kid, I had all the same symptoms listed by others. Then when I was around 30, I ate two small raw carrots. My heart rate spiked like I was running and would not slow down. I got dizzy and felt sick - thought I would pass out. I could hardly talk because of the fast heart rate. My neighbor was taking me to the emergency room and when I got outside I violently threw up -symptoms went away. Still went to hospital - they thought I was crazy when I told them about being allergic to carrots & what had happended. Went home - don't eat carrots anymore. Still have this happen with other foods - sometimes I don't know what food has caused it but I have the same reaction. Have talked to allergy doc but nothing can be done so be careful your allergies can change over time.

Oral Allergies to concord grape skins
- WOW, at least I don't feel like some nutbag anymore. I love fresh concord grapes, but since I was a child I've avoided the skin-only the skin makes my mouth and lips itchy and swollen. Same thing with fresh mango and pineapple. Is there some content of the skin that is similar in all three?
