Ignorant, selfish parents

My son is severely allergic to peanuts and my child will die if he is exposed. Children cannot protect themselves which is why I support banning peanuts in schools. Before I had this problem, my older child attended a peanut free preschool because of another child. Sure it may have been a bit of an inconvenience, but it was to protect the life of a child. As children get older, they learn to protect themselves from such risks, but smaller children cannot protect themselves from a friend who eats a peanut butter sandwich, doesn't wash his hands, and touches surfaces that my child can potentially touch and may lead to his death. They do not know what foods may contain traces of peanuts. To parents who say we should homeschool our children, you are ignorant. Peanut allergies are on the rise and someday you may be dealing with your child being near death because someone else's couldn't go 7 hrs without peanut butter.

peanuts in schools

OMG!!! I am so frustrated...I have a son who has an airborn allergy to peanuts!!! do you know it could kill him on the spot???? I don't danger your child in any way. Why is it ok to put my childs life on the line??? I educate my children and they even ask me all the time if it's safe! They remember not brething and we are rushing them to the hospital! Yes it is a free country!!! since i don't hold a gun to your childs head... and walk around with something that could KILL THem why is it ok for you too..... I am sick of kids calling the shots...ex: i only can eat pb&j!!! when are the parents going to step up!!! I get it if you need the protein but there are sooooo many different things you can do. Trust me I will fight until the day I cannot to keep my children safe. Because it is a free country and we do go to public schools I expect them to care for my children while they are there.....like they care for yours....Nothing is like back in the day......so get use to it!!!!

Peanut free pre-school

My daughter will be attending a peanut free pre-school this year and I'm scrambling to find things to replace her favorite peanut butter. I've heard of children just smelling it and having a reaction, but my question is, how will they function in the world? Will they expect peanuts to be banned completely. I grew up where peanuts were grown and there are some pretty serious pesticides used on them. I think that's where the problem originates. They should do a study on that. It's strange that we consume foods that are treated with pesticides that tell you not to handle them without gloves.

What's Next....

So what's next with you people....Are you going to start a ban on nuts in grocery stores so you can drag your little brats there like normal people can, are you going to try to ban them in summer camps and from passing out peanut butter cups at Holloween....I guess I shouldn't give you people any ideas...I'm sorry your child has allergies but that is your problem....And then you're so used to being able to disrupt other peoples lives that instead of your child being the one to not live normally we all have to make exceptions for you...If your kids have allergies keep them at home or if there are so many of these kids start your own sans- peanut schools and leave our normal kids alone...If my kid had allergies I would homeschool them, not try to force other people to work around my kids abnormalities.

Nut Allergy

Anyone can eat nuts any time. keep them at home. Dont send them to school just for the sake of its my human right. were not stopping ur kids eating nuts - just have a bit of consideration for the kids who ae allergic. Its all about risk assessment. My kids school has failed my child by not advising me that 90 kids willl bring in food containing nuts to celebrate multi cultural day. If they told me beforehand Id have kept my kid off school. Ignorance is bliss - but nut allergy is on the increase. Think yourself lucky if you are fortunate enough not to have a kid with severe nut allergy. you are not making your kid suffer by asking them to eat nuts at home instead of in school

Is Peanut Free Possibel

As the director of a preschool program we face the challenges of allergies. We have had "nut-free" rooms in the past and are going to a "nut free" snack for the'10-'11 school year. Our children take turns providing snack for everyone in the class. During this last year one of the kids brought a trail mix with a peanut cereal in it that caused a reaction in a child who had never had one. To the parents who are so upset that peanut butter has been taken away this is hard to explain but there are very few things that we do at preschool that while so innocent could potentially kill a child and as a director it is my responsibility to keep them safe. Undiagnosed allergies are on the rise and a simple step like nut free snacks might prevent a severe reaction. We will be asking parents to provide fruit, cheese, chips, and other crackers whose label claims to be nut free.

hey

i would like to say what about the children who have celiac disaese the food they eat are gluten free, but have peanuts in for a filler, or may be made on a nut facility. some children need different type of food for a diet, would about these children. what happen to teaching your kids not to touch other people food with nuts. when i was in school there were always children who were allergic to peanuts, they were just taught to be careful.(they are all alive today, so whats different....)

what if it were your child?

This makes me sad. Some children are so allergic to peanuts that even breathing it causes painful sores and rashes. Any parent who feels so inconvenienced about not being able to bringing peanuts to school should keep their own kids home for homeschooling. All children have the right to be safe in public school. I know it's not realist to keep them away 100% of the time but yes we need to do what we can and that might be keeping them out of schools. They do make soybutter that tastes very close to peanut butter and gives children the protein they need.

PLEASE DO NOT BE STUPID!!

peanut allergy is on a massive rise!! it has doubled from 1997-2002. my daughter is very allergic. before you say it is not your problem, just wait untill your kids friend or your grandchild is in need of a trip to the ER!

Peanuts should be banned

I have a 8 & 5 year old, with life threatening allergies, we are very isolated and disabled by the allergies, if they are not in my care, they should be cared for at school which means "NO PEANUTS" Why are peanuts so important to eat at school, feed them at home. I can understand PB&J is easy to make, but i don't want someone comfort food killing my kids!

to peanut "NUTS"

I am sick and tired of parents who have children with peanut allergies pushing their problems onto our kids ! My youngest daughters school is peanut free this year and I was appalled when she came home one day with her own snack ( was not even anything with peanuts in it) because the teacher said she couldn't have it at school. ( It might have some aspect of peanut something in it ) I jhave a 16 yr old with severe physical disabilities and never once in her whole school career have I EVER demanded that hundreds of children change their lifestyle to accomodate her disabilities and I certainly could have asked for many changes to classroom and school ways of doing things. I took responsibility for my own child not expected other people to do it for me. She still has life threatening disabilities and allergies and attends regular school. I have taught her how to handle her issues, who is going to follow these kids around wiping both ends when they are grown ??

please use common sense

we found out my brother was highly allergic to peanuts while he was in nursery school. in all the years he was in school, he did not have ONE incident with nuts. outside of school, however, he had a few, and he is the first to admit, it was becuase HE touched the nuts! in his own words as a 37 year old man, once a kid goes through a highly allergic peanut attack, they will really WANT to stay away from nuts. my mother did not remove any nut products from our home - he simply stayed away from them. oh my GOD, can it really be that simple? my brother says YES. parents, i sympathize with your situation, BUT, it is unreasonable to expect the peanut eating population to stop. they can be made aware, and act upon that information in a careful manner. lord knows, i've never smeared anyone with peanut butter while i was in school. give your allergic children a little credit. if they know what they are allergic to and why, and how they can get it. they will be cautious.

Nutty

Keep Peanuts Fish and all the rest of the world should not suffer put the Non Nut Kids in a room altogether so they can eat You cant take away freedoms of everyone else because of a personal problem some people truley enjoy the attention and love the drama that comes from epi attention.
—Guest Nut Head

what about kids that love nuts

nuts are protein. we need protein in our diets. they should homeschool all these kids who are allergic! why ruin kids lunches at school.
—Guest ktd

to peanuts should be banned

Your analogy of the loaded gun is a fallacy. It is the same as saying, that sending your peanut allergic child to school is like marching them in front of a firing squad - now it sounds like your the bad parent. You make it seem that the parent that sends pb and j is reckless with your analogy, guilting people into responsibility is wrong. If your kid is allergic educat them, and if they are not, make sure they know about allergies. It's not that difficult people.
